Meetings:
Meetings are held at 10am on the first Tuesday of every month, at the home of Sarah Eagles, 5A Osborne Road, Andover. We are a friendly group of nine and any new members are always welcome.
The next meeting is Tuesday 4th August 2009 when we will be discussing Snow Storms in a Hot Climate by Sarah Dunant.
In February we read "No Bones" by Anna Burns. "Horrible! Wonderful! Compelling! Disturbing" Worthwhile! Mixed reaction from loved it to hated it. It made the Irish Troubles very real". This book created a very lively discussion.
In March we read "From the Holy Mountatin" by William Dalrymple. The group was greatly divided about this book telling of the history of Christianity from Mount Athor through Turkey, Lebananon, Syria and Israel. Very well illustrated with wonderful photographs. Superb weaving of ancient past to modern times, interesting, informative. However, some people found it had going and were unable to finish it.
In April we read TheYacoubian Building by Al Aswany which was about Egyptian society. It was quite disturbing in the oppression of women and, the corruption of society where everyone is greasing palms to get their own way, the fundamental religion and terror camps. The book was a best seller in Arabic and also made into a film. However the group did not enjoy this book at all.
